The main differences between CMYK and RGB colour models are easy to differentiate.

Here’s some clear differences between the two:

CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black)

Colour Model Type: Subtractive

  • Explanation: It works by subtracting light from white. When colours are combined, more light is absorbed (or subtracted), and the result is a darker colour.

Primary Colours: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.

  • Explanation: These are the four colours used in printing. Black (Key) is added to enhance depth and detail.

Usage: Printing

  • Explanation: This model is used for colour printing and is the standard for most colour printers. It’s ideal for physical media where ink is applied to paper or other materials.

Colour Range: Limited

  • Explanation: CMYK has a more limited colour range compared to RGB. It cannot reproduce as many colours as RGB can.

RGB (Red, Green, Blue)

Colour Model Type: Additive.

  • Explanation: It works by adding light to create colour. When colours are combined, more light is added, and the result is a lighter colour.

Primary Colours: Red, Green, Blue

  • Explanation: These are the three colours used in digital displays like computer monitors, televisions, and cameras.

Usage: Digital Screens

  • Explanation: This model is used for digital devices that emit light, making it suitable for screens and electronic displays.

Colour Range: Broad

  • Explanation: RGB has a wider colour range compared to CMYK. It can reproduce a broader spectrum of colours, which makes it ideal for digital media.

Summary:

CMYK: Subtractive, used for printing, primary colours are Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black, has a limited colour range.

RGB: Additive, used for digital screens, primary colours are Red, Green, and Blue, has a broad colour range.

Understanding these differences is crucial for designers and printers to ensure accurate colour reproduction in various media.
